It is not as in Judaism and Christianity. First of all, understand that total enlightenment as the final goal of buddhist spirituality is something beyond the mind. It is something so deep that makes it very difficult to understand, to achieve and to realise. When we get realisation we get everything. By this the Buddha taught in many ways. The silver line is in the Four Noble Truth and the Eightfold Path. At the time some saw and described as in Theravada, some saw as in Mahayana, others as in Tantrayana. The complete philosophy and method should contain the philosophy and practice of all the Eightfold Path. Morality is the base; meditation is the core path; samadhi of, or total absorption in Nirvana is the goal. Any schools or sects which do not contain these three main aspects or factors are artificial or superficial.
